Alcohol & Drugs Alcohol and drug abuse affects an estimated 20-30% of the gay and lesbian population Ð a rate that is two to three times higher than the general population. It is a major contributor to increased risk of HIV and AIDS, and other health and safety problems including drunk driving fatalities, date rape, and verbal and physical abuse. Anxiety, alienation, depression, and low self-esteem among gay men, bisexuals and transgender increase their risk for substance abuse. In Vermont, a survey conducted at Gay Pride in 2000, found There were low frequencies of risk behavior related to injection drug use (0.7%), needle sharing habits (0%) or having been heavily drunk (7.9%). However, 33.8% of the respondents reported having oral, anal or vaginal sex while drunk or high. (2001 Vermont Comprehensive HIV Prevention Plan) Vermont Resources
