Health Matters

Men who have sex with men have the same basic health problems as any other men, with a few exceptions. They are at higher risk for HIV or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) if they do not practice safer sex or engage in needle sharing. Because gay and bisexual men are more likely to smoke and drink than straight guys, they can be at higher risk for certain types of cancer (such as lung cancer), heart disease and other health problems.

It has been shown that gay men are less likely to access health care for fear of discrimination and/or lack of health insurance.  Not all companies in VT offer same sex partner benefits.

The following page offers information about different health conditions, as well as resources in VT. Be advised that RU12's Vermont Health Diversity Project not only has a directory of GLBT friendly providers in Chittenden County, but offers tips on how to talk to a provider so that you can receive the care you need.
